Production and consumption of B group vitamins in situ. ArchiMer

The changes in concentration of thiamine, biotin and vitamin B sub(12) in water of the soaked bottles for 6 h in situ in the north basin of Lake Biwa were examined successively over 30 hours. The concentrations of the vitamins changed comparatively during 6 h. soaking in situ. Generally, the concentrations of thiamine, biotin and vitamin B sub(12) were in high levels in the morning and in low levels in evening both in the soaked bottles and in the surrounding water. The fluctuation ranges in concentration of vitamins in a 5 m deep layer were greater than those in thermocline. Productivity in tropical upwelling areas considered by a new method of analysis and determination. ArchiMer

When in frontal zones of upwelling areas, a two-component mixing of nutrient rich upwelled water and oligotrophic offshore waters occurs, the amounts of nutrient consumed (- Delta N) and oxygen produced (+ Delta O2) can be evaluated by a detailed analysis of diagrams, in which salinity is the conservative parameter. By this same method, the corresponding T-S diagram allows a determination of the net heat gain of the upwelling water body during its offshore transport, and consequently the corresponding residence time in the photic zone. Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer

One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Peculiarities of reproduction and generative production of tropical copepods ArchiMer

The aim of the present investigation consisted in revealing the regular natural changes of fecundity in mass pelagic copepods of the World Ocean tropical zone. Particular emphasis was placed on determination of the clutch size, duration of development, rate of generative production formation at both organism and population levels, and connection of these processes with environmental conditions. The major difficulty lay in the fact that most mass species of tropical copepods are laying eggs immediately into water thus complicating the determination of quantitative characteristics of reproduction.

A re-evaluation of marine nematode productivity OMA

Nematodes are the most abundant multicellular animals in marine sediments but their role in the benthos has not been properly quantified yet. In nearly all energy-flow budgets of marine systems their annual production P is given as about nine times their biomass B and their part in the total energy-flow is consequently estimated as anywhere between 3 and 30% of the total (carbon) input in the benthic system. Our laboratory experiments demonstrate that nematode productivity is much higher than P/B ~ 9 per year and may reach values of over 60 for bacterial grazers. Chitin was estimated in samples of planktonic crustaceans living in Calvi Bay (Corsica). The percentages of chitin, with respect to dry weight, are comprised between 3.10% in Clausocalanus spp. and 12.22% in Cladocera (mainly Evadne ). The percentage of chitin remained approximatively constant during larval development in Calanus helgolandicus (3.26%). Using these results and the values of total biomass and production estimated by Dauby (1985) at the same place during a complete annual cycle (1983-1984), chitin biomass and production were calculated for every planktonic crustacean species (or group of species) and for the whole crustacean plankton. Larval rearings were performed with seawater either freshly pumped or after storage in a pond. Concerning bacterial populations these waters were characterized by a high diversity, little sized bacteria whose few of them (1%) were cultivable on Zobell medium. In the tanks, the bacterial ecosystem was modified by the presence of antibiotics, larvae and algae: the diversity was lowered, the cellular volume was increased by a factor 2 to 5, 100% bacteria were cultivable and chloramphenicol resistant, and their metabolism changed. The aerobic respiration of meiofauna in general and of nematodes in particular is studied by means of manometric (Cartesian or related divers) or electrode-based (polarographic electrodes) techniques. Larvas de peces clupeiformes y microzooplankton en la estación fija "La Libertad" desde noviembre de 1999 a julio del 2000 OceanDocs

Uno de los principales objetivos es la evaluación de los impactos que los eventos de El Niño tienen en las poblaciones del ictioplancton, con especial referencia a huevos y larvas de especies de interés comercial. Para el efecto se utilizan también, a más de los datos oceanográficos, especies de foraminíferos planctónicos como indicadores del estado del ecosistema. En el presente documento se detalla la distribución de larvas de Sardinops sagax (sardina), Ophistonema sp., Cetengraulis mysticetus (chuhueco), Anchoa y Engraulis ringens (anchoveta) durante el primer semestre del año 2000.

Composición del plancton en la Puntilla Santa Elena durante agosto 2002 (Ecuador) OceanDocs

Esta investigación comprende los estudios del fitoplancton-zooplancton-ictioplancton, realizados en tres sitios de la Península Santa Elena durante agosto 2002, área designada para la proyección de "Arrecife Artificial de las Fuerzas Militares del Ecuador": un avión, barco y tanque de guerra, estructuras artificiales consideradas como basura chatarra (de gran tamaño), que serían recicladas para la bio-exploración artificiales hacia la seguridad de los recursos marinos del Ecuador. En el Estudio Ambiental se describen las consideraciones necesarias de carácter multidisciplinario (EIA-INOCAR, 2002).
